Chapter fifteen

The car hugs the curves of the road as we speed down the lane, trying to get to the airport as quickly as possible. I’m still taken aback that Mia demanded to come along. She’s probably just trying to be nice, but I actually kind of appreciate her stubbornness. I never would have asked her to come, but I’m glad I won’t be going alone.

I press the button on the car steering wheel, “call Clive.” I command the voice recognition system, looking over at a quiet Mia. She seems lost in her thoughts.

The phone dials and I wait for Clive to pick up.

“Hello, Mr. Harper.” He answers.

“I’m just calling to make sure the crew arrived to prep the plane and control has been made aware I’ll be flying round trip from here to Denver tonight. I have one passenger. I’ll give you her details when we get there. ETA is ten minutes from the airport.”

“Yes, sir. The crew is here now and preparations are underway. I’ll make a note of the passenger and I’m happy to inform you that control has cleared you for travel tonight.”

“Excellent. See you in a few.” I hang up and find Mia looking at me.

“Mr. Boss Man.” She says saucily.

“I thought I was Mr. Grump?”

“You’re a man who wears many hats, apparently.”

I smile and make the next left and see the airport light ahead. The anxiety in my gut churns. We get to the gate that lead to the hangers and I show the guard my security credentials and give him Mia’s license to scan. They let us through and we drive to the Harper private hangar. The large doors are open and inside a group of busy workers move around inside, running around a moderately sized white jet. Mia’s quiet again, eyes wide as she takes everything in. Tonight, she will have a front row seat to see how celebrities travel.

“You ready?” I ask, breaking her away from her thoughts as I pull into a space and park.

“Uh huh.” She smiles nervously.

I get out of the car and walk over to the passenger side opening the door for Mia. She exits the car and we hastily make our way to the jet where we are met with Clive, one of my father’s executives who oversees operations. He’s a tall man that has always kind of reminded me of an Italian version of Michael Kane. Charming and charismatic, and always on his A-game.

“Hello, Mr. Harper. As always, it’s a pleasure to see you. I’ve just been informed the staff has finished prepping the jet and it’s been cleared for your flight to Denver. You want to look it over yourself like usual? And if you’ll be needing a flight attendant for your guest, I have one on stand-by.”

Like I said, always on his A-game.

“That’s alright, Clive. Mia and I should be fine on our own. Thank you for seeing to all of this all on such short notice.”

“Comes with the job sir,” he smiles
